Mark Douglass has been entranced with the art of glassblowing for over 20 years. Through an intricate process of heating, blowing, shaping and cooling, Douglass creates thick, robust vases and bowls that are reminiscent of modern cubist-style design and the more traditional fluted styles. Some of his pieces are timelessly elegant, others border on the surreal and the bizarre. However Douglass goes beyond the simply decorative, and makes an ambitious artistic statement through using themes and imagery from botanic, figurative and architectural motifs.

While the glassblowing techniques Douglass uses date back thousands of years, the heat-resistant paints that give his work their distinct colours - reds, purples, greens, yellows - were developed in the US relatively recently. These paints have given Douglass the scope to experiment more with patterns, particularly cubism's abstract shapes and rough line work, which lend themselves to the stretching and twisting of glass.

Douglass has worked on large-scale commissions over the years, and his signature style is on display in some of Australia’s leading corporate collections including BHP, Cadbury Schweppes, BP and Scanlan and Theodore. Douglass has also exhibited successfully both in Australia and internationally, and his work can be found in the collections of many private collectors.
