Dieter Engler has been exhibiting throughout Australia since 1980 and has held numerous highly successful solo exhibitions at Greenhill Galleries over the past decade. He continues to explore the commanding presence of the rural West Australian landscape, portrayed in the surreal Euro-impressionistic style for which he is well renowned.

Engler’s works are bathed in a warm light, achieved through the utilisation and gradual development of harmonious tones and subtle forms. These rich oil paintings allude to the human occupation of an area and its affect on the spiritual nature of the land. The fascinating juxtaposition of recurring man-made and natural symbols in Engler’s works, suggest the intimate relationship between the natural environment and the human presence within it. Each image is intended to represent an idea rather than a place, hence, Engler does not pursue realism but instead depicts a symbolic plan of a region.
“As an artist, I find it essential (as well as enjoyable) to get out of the studio and into the landscape.”

The majority of Engler’s current works are in oil, allowing space for him to consciously build the image in layers, and offering intuitive solutions to problems as they arise. The rhythm of this process resonates throughout his work. Engler skilfully unearths the complex solution to create a unified image of rich colours. This multi-layered style is indicative of the profound synthesis between Engler’s psyche and his complex painting technique.
