The captivating works of Ian Greig are nature studies concentrating on the aesthetic exploration of water. In them, he pursues the ineffable ambiguities of the surface of a body of water via the processes of painting.

These almost opalescent oil paintings have a dream-like essence, with delicate hues, graceful forms and the simplest of graphic brush-marks. His works explore the effect of light and shadow on the natural environment, conveying a sense of silence and isolation. In his attempt to reconcile the horizontal with the vertical, the invisible with the visible, these paintings seek to negotiate that slippery space between culture and nature, construct and experience; a space between meanings where oppositions and reversals can occur and where fixed categories dissolve.

“My paintings are inspired by the reflective surface of water such as ponds, creeks and rivers. The contemplative nature of the surface of a pond is the result of three visual fields coming into play simultaneously – the bottom of the pool, the surface with its leaves and ripples, and the reflections of what exists above. All these combine to create the shifting visual ambiguity, which drives my work. This series is my latest adventure into the ephemeral and the ineffable via the process of painting; an ongoing project in which the outcomes, like the subject of its focus, are in a constant state of flux.”

Greig has held several successful exhibitions throughout Australia, and is represented in corporate and private collections in South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory.
