Scottish born figurative artist Euan Heng has been living and working in Australia for 30 years. His paintings have a deliberation and preciseness gained by pre-working the images in pastel or pencil before committing them to paint. Contemporary symbolism, flat pattern making and the stylistic treatment of subject are trademark features of his work.
However, one of Heng's most striking traits is his acute and highly developed appreciation of the comic potentialities of human vanity. A lone man enacting out a simple and ambiguous gesture is the trademark to Heng’s imagery. Delighting in riddles, he seeks to continually shift the focus of a piece through what he refers to as ‘foils’. Whether this be the accentuation of a hand or a piece of clothing or through his use of plant, animal and bird iconography, these ’foils’ provide material for visual puns and stray symbolism to momentarily distract the viewer from the artist’s true narrative path. His strong reputation is undoubtedly due to this strength in psychological enquiry - a central focus motivating his artistic visions that lie somewhere between our dreams and reality.
As a predominantly figurative artist, Heng‘s stylistic focus has remained relatively unchanged since initially forging his affiliations with Parisian modernity over twenty years ago. Strongly influenced by the European ‘masters’ such as Picasso and Léger, Heng’s strength lies in his highly stylised and deceptively minimal technique. From piece to near identical piece each image reveals devoted iconographic repetition, illuminating every simple gesture within to construct Heng’s idiosyncratic and puzzling narratives.
Heng is renowned internationally and is one of Australia’s most successful figurative painters working today. He has been awarded many prizes and commissions for his art including: A Pernod Prize (Scotland) for painting, GTV Prize (printmaking); two Commissioned Print Editions (1988 & 1991) for the Print Council of Australia. His work is in the collections of Artbank, National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, & New Parliament House, Canberra, among others.

Current Associate Professor in Fine Art (Part Time), Faculty of Art And Design, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.
