Angus McDonald’s still life works are exquisitely rendered in oils; his inanimate objects purely serve as a medium with which to study light, and the path that light pursues. He also noticeably investigates the void, the contrasting and opposing dark spaces in his work.

The meticulous workings of McDonald’s dramatic paintings reflect and parallel the workings of this artists mind, revealing a deep connection between art and life. For him, painting is a necessity and a passion. He often has several paintings on the go, continually studying the compositions of each, looking for a balance. It is almost a meditation of a work for McDonald, with periods of time where paint does not even hit the canvas, and paintings that can take months to complete.

To achieve a balance and harmony in a work, to find out the real truth, one must look for it. Sometimes there is no clear boundary between still life and real life for McDonald, both being foremost in the brain.

Whilst painting is clearly a passion for McDonald, it is drawing that underpins his work in media (as diverse as furniture and fashion) and enables him to find the true nature of his subject. He is most known for his immense sensual accurate drawings of cows, bulls and horses, depicting the animals with a remarkable sense of strength and grace.

Having studied at the Julian Ashton School in Sydney in the early 90s, followed by several years living and studying in Europe, Angus McDonald had also been fortunate enough to be chosen as the artist in residence during two expeditions to the Antarctica (2006 and 2008).
