West Australian artist Shaun Atkinson has been exhibiting his art since 1975. Having travelled widely, living abroad both in Europe and Asia, Shaun's colourful and sophisticated works exude this worldly influence. Shaun's latest body of work includes works influenced by his travels and exhibitions in Asia and the Middle East, as well as works exploring the effect of light and shadow on landforms surrounding his beloved Margaret River home. The physical properties of the work evoke the strength and conflict within nature. The shadow, which is ever present in Atkinson's work, is a vehicle that explores territories of the subconscious. It stimulates past experience and metaphors of place, and here we find a silence and isolation integral to the Western Australian landscape.
Atkinson plays an important role within Western Australia's art community having fulfilled various important positions that include the Director of Margaret River Galleries and lecturer of Visual Arts at a number of educational institutions. He has exhibited for the Festival of Perth, Gomboc Galleries, Bunbury Regional Galleries, Gulbenkian Galleries London, and was selected in 1999 as part of Greenhill Galleries prestigious "Directors' Choice Exhibition".
