"RECENT PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS"

Angus McDonald is one of Australia’s most collected contemporary artists, which is an extremely impressive mantle when you learn that he did not even pick up a paintbrush until he was 31 years of age. He took to painting like a duck to water and hasn’t looked back.

Nearing on two decades as a full-time artist, Angus McDonald has lived an extraordinary life. After initially studying at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney, McDonald was awarded the Brett Whiteley Traveling Scholarship and went on to live and paint on the small Greek island of Leros for three years. In 2000 he was accepted to study at the prestigious Florence Academy of Art. He has been fortunate to travel and exhibit his art internationally, including an exhibition of note in London in 2007 following a stint as an expedition painter in the Antarctic. He returned to Antarctica in 2008 as an Artist in Residence.

With an immense love for the beach and the ocean, Angus McDonald has settled in the seaside village of Lennox Heads in NSW. It is here that McDonald revels in the landscape of the surrounding area; a space in which he is able to observe one of his most loved subjects, the cow. His sensitively executed, naturalistic drawings of this beautiful creature capture McDonald’s great respect for an animal he describes as “really wise.”

Angus McDonald is currently most renowned for his sublimely rendered still-life works. His manipulation of light, colour, line and composition transcends the ordinary and makes it extraordinary. His simple depictions of cloth, fruit and vessels have an understated dramatic suspense, made possible by the simplicity of McDonald’s painterly approach.

With an inability to retain his works for long before they are snapped up by eager collectors, Greenhill Galleries keenly anticipate this solo exhibition of Angus McDonald works. McDonald has successfully exhibited all over Australia, as well as in London, New York, New Mexico, Toronto, Glasgow, Singapore. Leros and Tokyo. He is represented in many important national and international collections.
